Home Hazard Checklist for Fall Prevention
Stairs & Steps (Indoors & Outdoors):
- Are there papers, shoes, books, or other objects on the stairs?
- Tip: Always keep objects off the stairs.
- Are some steps broken or uneven?
- Tip: Fix loose or uneven steps.
- Is there a light and light switch at the top and bottom of the stairs?
- Tip: Have an electrician install an overhead light and light switch at both the top and bottom of the stairs. Consider using light switches that glow.
- Has a stairway light bulb burned out?
- Tip: Have a friend or family member change the light bulb.
- Is the carpet on the steps loose or torn?
- Tip: Ensure the carpet is firmly attached to every step, or replace it with non-slip rubber treads.
- Are the handrails loose or broken? Is there a handrail on only one side of the stairs?
- Tip: Fix loose handrails or install new ones. Ensure handrails are on both sides of the stairs and run the full length of the stairs.
Floors:
- Are there papers, shoes, books, or other objects on the floor?
- Tip: Pick up any objects and always keep the floor clear.
- Do you have throw rugs on the floor?
- Tip: Remove the rugs or use double-sided tape or non-slip backing to prevent slipping.
- Do you have to walk over or around wires or cords (like lamp, telephone, or extension cords)?
- Tip: Tape or coil cords next to the wall to avoid tripping. If needed, have an electrician install additional outlets.
- Are the things you use often on high shelves?
- Tip: Keep frequently used items on lower shelves, about waist high.
- Is your step stool sturdy?
- Tip: If you must use a step stool, use one with a bar to hold onto. Never use a chair as a step stool.
Kitchen:
- Are there objects on the floor in the kitchen?
- Tip: Always keep the floor clear of clutter.
Bedrooms:
- Is the light near the bed hard to reach?
- Tip: Place a lamp close to the bed where it's easy to reach.
- Is the path from your bed to the bathroom dark?
- Tip: Install a nightlight to illuminate the path. Some nightlights turn on automatically in the dark.
Bathrooms:
- Is the tub or shower floor slippery?
- Tip: Place non-slip rubber mats or self-stick strips on the floor of the tub or shower.
- Do you need support when getting in and out of the tub or standing up from the toilet?
- Tip: Install grab bars next to and inside the tub, and next to the toilet.
